Mission: To provide an exceptional and comprehensive tennis experience for our members along with the opportunity for social, fitness and family activities.

Presidents Message

Hundred degree temperatures and here I am at the office.  I think I need to come up with an excuse to leave early and head to the club - maybe a set of tennis, quick jump in the pool, and a glass of wine on the deck.  We are pretty darn lucky to have such a wonderful club where we can  hang out on these warm, lazy summer days.

Even on lazy summer days there is still an amazing array of activities and happenings at the club.  It can be bewildering particularly for some of our newer members.  One of my goals this year is to ramp up the amount of communication to members.  I’m talking quality, not quantity, here.  The point is to make sure members can take advantage of all the club has to offer and feel engaged.  In the long run, the club can only benefit from involved, engaged, enthusiastic members.

So here is how to stay connected:

Baseline monthly newsletter.  This is our primary source of information to members.  You will find the President’s Message, Club Manager Message, Pros Message, Fitness Center Message, calendar of activities, and other useful information.  The best way to receive the newsletter is by email so make sure we have your address.  (Ours is sent to both work and home). Hard copies are also available in the clubhouse.

What’s Happening weekly email.  This is new and you should be seeing the first one shortly.  It is simply a weekly email listing all of the club activities for that week.  A very simple way to stay informed.

Activity Board.  Soon to be at the front desk will be a monitor displaying club activities for that week including tennis related activities, pool times, fitness court classes, committee meeting times, special events, even the weekly special at Sasi’s.

Staff Member Photos.  I’m not so sure the staff appreciates this idea as much as I do, but we are going to find a spot and hang their pictures.  Julie and Sue are working on the logistics but the idea is to give members an easy way to connect names with faces.

Board Meeting.  Our board meetings are always open to members.  I can’t promise great entertainment but if you want to learn about the inner workings of the club, you are welcome to attend.  Meetings are the 4th Wednesday of every month starting at 6:00 pm.  We also produce written minutes which you are more than welcome to review.  You can go to the Member section of the Web site to find past meeting minutes.

Tennis Pro Staff.  Any of the tennis Pros can help answer questions about our tennis programs and instruction.  If you are not sure who to talk with, contact Lisa Moldrem at extension 21, Kathryn Osborne at extension 16 or Phil Ansdell at extension 20.

Management Staff.  Julie, our Club Manager, and Sue, Member Services Manager, are always available to members if you have questions, concerns, comments, complaints or even compliments.

Web Site.  The club web site is a great place to go when seeking general information about the club, a member roster, past newsletters, club financials and tennis policies. (www.centralparktennisclub.com).

Annual Meeting.  Usually in June of every year we have our Annual Meeting.  This is a great way to get caught up on club happenings and hear from Committee Chairs.  We may also schedule periodic informational meeting as we did last year when we discussed the expansion project.

Throw in several club bulletin boards, an occasional letter, and impromptu gatherings, and I think we’ve got you covered.

I can also point you in the right direction.  Feel free to call or email if I can help or if you just want to share an idea.

Jack Goldberg (work 425 576-1900 x203 or home 425 827-9058) or jack.goldberg@hrpmsi.com

Manager's Miscellany

Wow, do we have some talented and dedicated tennis players at this place!  Take a look at page 3 and 5 to see all the names of our juniors, members and staff who had success in tournaments these last few weeks.  The Washington State Champs tournament we hosted saw an all-time high of entries, 360.. and the finalists and runners-up from the Washington State Open showed not only can they play tennis, but they can endure the heat of 90 and 100 degrees...Congratulations to everyone!

These next few weeks we will be wrapping up our summer junior and teenie tennis programs.  All of the pros have worked hard and will be taking some much deserved breaks the last few weeks of August before we venture into our Fall programs.  Look for the kickoff to fall with an adult tennis camp... to get everyone prepared for our Club Tournament, October 8-18, 2009

Club rosters are close to production.  As soon as our Committee Chairs are finalized and some policy changes confirmed, we will have the rosters completed and mailed.  Remember, you can get member information off our website at www.centralparktennisclub.com, the Member Login page.

I will be out of the Club for a few days in August, getting prepared for a full fall and winter season!  Hopefully all of you have similar opportunities to rejuvenate, enjoy the day, enjoy each other and enjoy the Club!

Club Manager

Pro's Court

I’ve been very blessed in being able to do what I love. I get to play, teach, laugh and see a refreshing look at life every time I work with young juniors. I continue to learn from them daily. Over the years I have heard some great anecdotes and stories from young juniors and parents, some that I can share and others …well ….let’s just say it was more information than I needed to hear. However, there are a few that I can share and remembered because of the child or the context of the situation.

Situation: Rally with spinners (large sponge balls) “My racquet needs a hard ball”
Comment: “Complete the rally and your racquet can have all the hard balls it wants.”

Situation: A player refusing to do warm-ups “warm-ups are what you wear”
Comment: “You’re right, how about we work on our footwork.”

Situation: Giving volley instructions, it’s like blocking, stopping, punching the ball.”Oh’ like how I hit my sister”
Comment: side track to the “ABC’s of tennis with “C” standing for Control…”We need to learn to control ourselves in our behavior and hitting the ball…….”

Situation: Parents’ sharing
· Their child would sleep with their racquet. Question: Does he wake up with lines on his face?
· Their child would ask each day if it was tennis day and proceeded to cry if it wasn’t. Question: Can I have more court time?

· Their child (15 years ago at the age of 3) would use a ball point pen to hit a tennis ball because he couldn’t use a racquet in the house. Question: Is he on the circuit yet?

What fun!

A quick reminder that the Fall schedule for Team and Teenie Tennis came out Friday, August 7th. Team will be starting the 30th of August with Teenie Tennis and Youth Tennis beginning on Saturday, September 12th. Registration forms are at the front desk.

Fitness Notes

FAT, SUGAR & SALT OH MY!!

These three ingredients help make the food that you are served at your favorite restaurant more palatable and your favorite snack food fly off the shelf.  Eating out often and choosing foods that are heavy in creams and sauces, even the salad dressing, can keep you on the upper end of the recommendations for sodium and fat intake:

1500-2400 mg/day of sodium for a healthy adult, less than 10% of calories from saturated fat, and total fat intake between 20-35% of calories/day, most of that coming from mono and polyunsaturated fat.

If sugar is a predominate ingredient in a product, it needs to be listed first, unless there are several different types-- then they can be listed separately.  So check for sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, brown sugar, molasses, cane sugar, honey, lactose, fructose …….

Foods that contain these three ingredients probably are not a whole food and have been processed and packaged to look enticing, but should be eaten sparingly.

If weight loss is your goal then ask for salad dressing or sauces on the side; be specific about what you want. Most restaurants will happily accommodate your wishes.

Fat, sugar and salt do up the flavor factor in our food but affect not only our waistline but potentially our health.

So, enjoy your favorite foods-- just remember portion size and moderation.

TENNIS TIDBITS

Central Park Junior Tennis Team News

The Central Park Junior Tennis Team concluded a successful summer season by reaching the quarterfinals of sectional competition, held in Beaverton, Oregon over the weekend of July 31st through August 2nd.

Junior Team Tennis is a program run by the USTA and consisting of co-ed teams of three or more girls and boys.  There are three skill categories of beginner, intermediate, and advanced, and three different age groupings of 12 and under, 14 and under, and 18 and under players.  Team matches consist of competition in girls and boys singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.

The Central Park team is composed of four girls and five boys:  Malia Lum, Jessie Lund, Laura Renfroe, Caroline Roush, Marco Bornstein, Matt Dahl, Andrew Haeger, Arash Hafizi, and Matthew Lim.  The core of this team has been together since January 2008, and has competed in six league seasons.  Our team competed in the 18/under intermediate category during the 2009 summer season, and compiled a strong 5-1 regular season record against teams from Forest Crest, Newport Hills, Overlake, Robinswood, and Silver Lake.

We headed down to our first ever sectional competition, held at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center, and competed against fourteen other teams from Washington and Oregon.  In our five team round robin, we compiled a 16-4 individual match record, tied with three other teams for the best winning percentage.  We headed into the championship round as one of six seeded teams.  We had a dominating victory over a team from Lake Oswego before losing in the quarterfinals to a tough team from Wenatchee that ended up playing for the overall sectional championships.

Throughout the regular season and into sectional competition, our players exhibited the hard work, determination, and sportsmanship which our junior teams have come to be known for.  They are excellent ambassadors of our Club and show that the future of tennis at Central Park is in good hands.  The players and parents have grown into a closely knit group of strong friendships that continue off the tennis courts.

The team wishes to thank the Central Park junior team coaches, who have been strong role models and excellent instructors, and to Julie Wheadon, the Tennis Committee, and the Central Park administative staff for their efforts in scheduling and coordinating our team play.

Wayne Lim,
Dad and Coach

The front desk at CPTC is here to help facilitate your time here at the club.  However, please try to keep your socializing to parts of the club other than the front desk.  When too many people are congregated, people are talking on their cell phones, etc. it can be difficult for the front desk staff to conduct business on the phone or to hear people who want help at the front desk.  Thank you for your consideration.

Do You Know About The Other Club?

As a member of Central Park Tennis Club you also have reciprocal rights to enjoy the Jericho Tennis Club in Vancouver, British Columbia.  That’s right.  You have another club.

The Jericho Tennis Club has enjoyed a beautiful beachfront location along the Southern shore of Burrard Inlet since 1916.  In 1998 this club, with over 2,000 members, underwent a multi-million dollar clubhouse renovation to expand member services especially dining, aquatic and fitness facilities.

You can play tennis (white attire) on their rebound ace surfaced courts (they have 12) and dine in their dining room.  The view across English Bay of the city and the mountains East of Vancouver is priceless.  The cocktail lounge and dining room has no equal along English Bay.

You owe it to yourself to plan a visit to Jericho Tennis Club the next time you visit Vancouver.  Just talk to Julie or Sue at the Club and they will set it up for you.

The tennis ball recycling program in the new black cans on the tennis courts is working and there is less trash in them. Thank you to all the players for cooperating!  -Vlad

Just a reminder that we want the least amount of disruption to your tennis game; however, at times we must access the tennis courts to prepare them for the day.  Please be patient while we blow off the courts, refill the water jugs and work toward providing the best environment for your tennis game!

Reminder that we are working with our neighbors and the City of Kirkland to address traffic concerns at our club’s entrance. There is concern for safety and general nuisance as members enter and exit the club or park in the over flow parking in a hazardous manner

Interested in joining a book group?  We have a group that meets here every other Thursday. Contact Sandy Eacker at
425-889-0383  for more information or email here
